I assumed that I would see other playersвЂ™ characters die. Feck, part of the reason I wanted multiplayer in this experience is to see how my survival skills matched up against others. Frankly, bad players should lose their characters in this experience. Unfortunately, the unskilled player has little to worry about.

When I join the multiplayer game of what I can only presume to be an unskilled player based on behavior I witness, and that same unskilled player can essentially free roam a town, making all sorts of noise and poor zombie engagement choices-that player shouldnвЂ™t live. Maybe that works currently if you donвЂ™t focus on how ultimately inconsequential the primary gameplay loop is after a few in-game days. I wouldnвЂ™t bother with these criticisms if I havenвЂ™t heard from UL that their intention is for this game to be the go-to ZA experience for players, meant to be played for the long-term.

And I donвЂ™t get to carry that stuff over afterward? Then what is the point of gathering it in the first place? ThatвЂ™s not a good sign for a game about gathering stuff. My first legacy completion, I-maybe-had to loot 1/4 of the map. The game itself has only generated tears in me after yawning several times in succession. IвЂ™d really like to play the game in those marketing ads. Etc, etc, minutia of a survival experience. The decision to share my food with a neighbor should be harrowing. There is little incentive to do any of those things to a mapвЂ™s completion, which means this game does not have a completionist experience. IвЂ™m fine with that, but you then also have to provide a benefit to immersing yourself in those play styles.

If youвЂ™re not going to create a central story introducing the world in meaningful ways, such as SOD had done, then your game is primarily about looting, resource sharing, or resource hoarding, and the dangers experienced while doing so. If it fails to get harder, or expand in meaningful ways-yet also realistically possible in post-launch development- then it has the potential of not being played again by me until 2019. SOD2 has until exactly the day of release for RDR2 to secure my attention for the long-run. Will likely duck back out again for another couple of months after getting my fill of a different legacy type.
